THAILAND HEALTH & BEAUTY SHOW 2009 WILL GENERATE MORE 80 MILLION BAHT OF BUSINESS
The health and beauty industry got a boost from the Thailand Health & Beauty Show 2009 to counter the economic slowdown with the prospect of generating more than 80 million baht of business this year.

Organised by Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce, the fair is one of the measures to boost both the domestic and export markets of the health and beauty industry which include spa, beauty-enhancement, massage, weight-reduction, private hospitals, dentistry, health food, and herbal products.

Thailand Health & Beauty Show 2009 took place during June 5-7 at Royal Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon. It provided 7,500 square meters of exhibition area for 309 booths of 175 local companies, and 7 booths from 6 foreign companies. All are leading operators in the health and beauty business.

Apart from serving as a shot in the arm for local operators, the fair also provided an opportunity for them to expand their markets overseas.

The fair was attended by 2,769 people during the June 5-6 trade days. Of these, 376 were overseas participants, most of whom were delegates and businessmen. The highest number of foreign businessmen came from Japan, Singapore, India, Germany, Malaysia, the United States, China, Israel, the Philippines, and Vietnam, in that order.

The public day on June 7, meanwhile, saw 5,325 participants, generating 2.07 million baht of business. The most popular goods were spa products, cosmetics, health food and beauty-enhancement products, hair products, and essential oil.

According to the Department of Export Promotion, the health and beauty products have a very good prospect to grow in the next quarter compared to other industry, thanks to their high quality products and world-class services.

Since the fair this year was two days shorter than last year, the earnings dropped in comparison, but not much. However, the exhibitors were in consensus that the size and the length of the trade fair were already appropriate. They also expressed satisfaction that the customers were the right target group for their business growth. The businesses resulting from the fair are expected to gross 81.16 million baht this year.

According to Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai, the health and beauty industry is not the only industry that has been affected by the global economic crisis. But the Ministry of Commerce, she said, had already asked the government for special support for the export industry. Short of supportive measures, the export industry would plunge to minus 19%, she said.

It was expected, however, that the global economy would pick up during the last quarter of this year and that Thailand’s export industry would recover in 2010. The Ministry of Commerce, she added, already had strategic plans and extra budgets to boost domestic consumption and increase overseas export in 2010.
